About the event
The Relationship Between Transitions of Unpaid Caregiving and Health Behaviours Across the Lifecourse in the UK
Enrico Pfeifer, Research Fellow,
University College London
Date: Thursday 26 November 2026
Time: 15:00 - 16:00 (London, GMT)
Platform: via Zoom
Chair: Bram Vanhoutte, Université Libre de Bruxelles
This webinar draws on Enrico's PhD research using the UK Household Longitudinal Study to examine the relationship between unpaid caregiving transitions and health behaviours across the lifecourse. The transitions of interest were entry into caregiving, exit from caregiving, changes in caregiving intensity, and multiple transitions over time. To address these questions, a wide range of longitudinal methods were used, including fixed effects models, propensity score matching, piecewise growth curve models, latent class analysis, and sequence analysis. Caregiving transitions were associated with both positive and negative changes in health behaviours, and these differed by transition type and caregiving characteristics. The webinar will consider the implications for policy and practice, and argue that caregiving should not be treated as a static exposure but as a dynamic process, in which timing and change over time need to be taken into account.
About the speaker
Enrico Pfeifer is a Research Fellow at the UCL Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care and Co-Lead of the Care theme at the ESRC Centre for Lifecourse Health Equity (Equalise). He recently completed his PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL. Before his PhD, he worked as a critical care nurse in Germany and the United Kingdom and also has lived experience as an unpaid carer. His work has the aim to generate evidence to inform policies that better recognise and support unpaid carers.
