About the session
Large-scale studies increasingly recognize the importance of including children’s own perspectives, as children are experts on their everyday lives and provide unique insights that cannot be captured through proxy reports alone. This webinar presents the methodological considerations underlying the integration of direct child surveys into the German AID:A study (Growing Up in Germany). It introduces the interviewer-administered, visually supported CAPI survey developed for children aged 5 to 8 years and implemented in AID:A 2023, discussing both its design and key findings.
The webinar further presents the development of a web-based self-administered (CAWI) version of the survey, including results from a feasibility study examining its implementation and data quality.
Finally, it offers an outlook on the ongoing AID:A WebKids pilot study and the long-term goal of sustainably integrating web-based child self-reports into future waves of AID:A.
About the speakers (pictured above left-to-right)
Speaker 1: Dr. Anja Linberg: Head of the research department Pedagogical concepts for childhood at the German Youth Institute. Her research focuses on the quality and impact of learning processes in early childhood and children's and families' living conditions.
Speaker 2: Dr. Sabine Düval: Senior researcher at the German Youth Institute. She works on the EU-funded GUIDEPREP project and provides in-house consulting on quantitative methods. Her research interests include child and family well-being, gender role attitudes, and survey methodology.
Speaker 3: Dr. Alexandra Langmeyer: Head of the research department Life situations and living environments of children at the German Youth Institute. Her research interests lie in the fields of childhood and family research, with a particular focus on families in vulnerable situations, family socialization, children’s development and well-being, and growing up with digital media, as well as survey research with children.
Speaker 4: Dr. Mirjam Weis: Interim Head of the Division Social Monitoring and Methodology at the German Youth Institute and PI of the Growing Up in Germany (AID:A) Survey. Her research focuses on relations between socialization contexts, parenting, and developmental outcomes of children and adolescents.
