The Worked For, The Hoped For, and the Serendipitous: A Journey Through Academia

Presenter: Professor Jessica A. Kelley
Chair of the Department of Sociology, Case Western Reserve University, USA

Chairs: Jessica Ordemann and Thomas O'Toole (Co-ordinators of the SLLS Early Career Network)

Summary
Jessica A. Kelley, a Professor of Sociology in the US, will share highlights from her career as a scholar of aging and the life course. She will talk about changes in academia and in her fields over the decades that have (re)shaped her scholarly work and the nature of her work more generally. Jessica will talk about planning and intentionality when charting a career path, but also being open to unexpected opportunities. She will talk about career challenges, such as keeping up with cutting-edge methods, or competing in a tough grant environment.

As the current Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, Jessica will be happy to discuss publication trends or the peer-review process. She will leave plenty of time for audience questions, which could be about publishing, grants, teaching, building collaborations, work-life balance. Anything!
